Method 1

Connect an Analog Phone Directly to a Built-In UCM FXS Port

Troubleshooting

No Dial Tone, No Registration or One-Way Audio?

Troubleshoot from the physical layer upward. Replacing passwords, codecs and dial patterns at random can create new faults. The symptom usually tells you which layer deserves attention first.

No dial tone

Confirm the phone is plugged into FXS, not FXO. Try a short known-good RJ11 cable and another known-good analog handset. Check ATA power if an adapter is used. If the ATA is registered but there is still no local tone, review the FXS port enable state and regional analog profile rather than the SIP trunk.

ATA will not register

Check IP reachability to the UCM, SIP server address, extension number, Auth ID and password. Confirm there is no duplicate registration problem or firewall policy blocking the path. Phone rings but there is one-way audio

If the ATA and UCM are on separate routed networks, investigate RTP reachability, firewall rules, NAT behaviour and address advertisement. One-way audio is usually an IP media-path issue, not a reason to replace the analog handset immediately.

Internal calls work, outside calls fail

Review UCM outbound routes, extension permission level, trunk status and carrier requirements. If inbound calls fail only, review inbound routes and destination selection. The analog phone is already proven if local extension-to-extension calls work normally.

DTMF does not work with IVR

Do Not Assume Emergency Calling Is Already Configured
